Common questions about speech therapy and Carolina Coast Speech Therapy in Wilmington, NC.

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language development, it is recommended that you talk to your child’s pediatrician or day care provider/teacher. These professionals are familiar with child development and can help determine if a referral to a speech language pathologist is warranted. The below links are a resource for determining how your child’s speech and language skills are developing in comparison to their peers.

How do I initiate services?

Contact Carolina Coast Speech Therapy via email, phone or fax to review concerns, discuss insurance and to set up an evaluation. I will contact your child’s pediatrician to obtain an evaluation order.

Where will the evaluation be done?

All evaluation and therapy services are provided in the client’s home, day care or private/charter school. Carolina Coast Speech Therapy does not provide services in an office setting. I offer the convenience of coming to your child and working with them in their most natural environment. This also allows for collaboration with parents, teachers and day care providers.

What can we expect at the evaluation?

Evaluations typically consist of standardized testing, observation, parent report of medical and developmental history and an oral mechanism exam.

Should I join my child in therapy sessions?

Ideally, it is beneficial for a parent to join in sessions if possible. However, if your child is seen at a school or day care and you are not present for sessions, I provide consistent communication about the sessions, as well as material for home practice if appropriate.

What is the frequency and duration of services?

An evaluation can take 30 minutes to 1 ½ hours, depending on the areas assessed and the age of the child. If an evaluation indicates that therapy is needed, sessions are scheduled for 30 minutes at a frequency of 1-3 times per week, based on the needs of the child.

What area do you serve?

Due to the traveling therapy model of Carolina Coast Speech Therapy, services are only provided in the Wilmington area. Teletherapy is an option for North Carolina residents.
